CHAPTER 11

A sleepless night had left Takaki tired and out. He couldn’t shut Daiki out of his mind. Deep down inside, he didn’t want to believe that Daiki is capable of doing that. He couldn’t help wondering whether there was some other reason why the latter asked him for such large amount of money. But what? He paid Daiki a good wage, he and his mother lived comfortably, so why need for more? It was puzzling him in the extreme.

When Daiki had changed from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan, he was really delighted, Daiki had moved a big part in his cold heart, the latter almost made it as his own, almost! Thank goodness he hadn’t got to the point of asking Daiki to marry him. Wouldn’t that have been so wrong? He’d thought he had learned his lesson when Yuri deceived him, now he realized that he was still vulnerable and that vulnerability meant mistakes.

Over and over he asked himself the question whether he knew Daiki at all, whether he had really got to know him. Discovering this side of Daiki is not pleasant to him. It had angered and dismayed him. Nevertheless he felt unsatisfied with the way he handled the situation. Maybe he should go and see Daiki, talk to him in his own surrounding try to find out exactly why he wanted so much money.

He had been due to go out with his colleagues but he cancelled the last minute, deciding that a visit to Daiki was more important. If he left it until tomorrow, he would have another night without sleep. He needed to sort this matter out, once and for all,

Even so, he felt an unexpected quickening of his senses as he neared Daiki’s house. Whatever he might think of Daiki now, there was no getting away from the fact that he was expecting his baby. It was the hardest thing he ever had to accept and it still gives him nightmares. He had never seen himself as a family man, never wanted to be a family man. Which is why he found it hard to believe that it was happening to him now.

Because he didn’t want Daiki to see him coming, to give latter the time to decide what he would say to him, he parked in a far place, but as he walked the corner of the street, he couldn’t believe what he saw. Daiki in the arms of that man again! His blood began to boil, until he looked more closely and saw that this was no romantic moments as he first imagined. The man was so scary, it looked as though he was threatening Daiki!

Takaki hastened his step, but before he got close, the man let Daiki go, sliding into his car and driving away fast, and while the man leave he’s making a mental note of his plate number, and he noticed that Daiki disappeared and went inside the house.

He wasn’t going to let this go and he wasn’t going to be satisfied until Daiki told him exactly what was going on. He immediately walked to Daiki’s house, open the gate and banged on the door. He wasn’t surprise when no one opened it. Daiki was probably scared that the man, whoever he was, had returned. So he called Daiki.

“Daiki, it’s me. I’m outside. Let me in.”

A moment of silence before Daiki spoke. “What are you doing here?” the latter asked and he thought he heard tears in Daiki’s voice.

“I need to speak to you.”

“I don’t want to speak to you, go away!”

“I’m going nowhere,” he declared firmly. “Open the door Daiki, before I break it down.” He wouldn’t have done that, of course, but it worked. He heard some shuffling of keys and locks inside and he’s more curious who’s that man was to make Daiki secure himself this much.

Daiki’s pale face shocked him. He immediately wanted to pull the latter into his arms and tell him that whatever it was that’s happening in his life, he would take care of it, but he guessed Daiki wouldn’t let him.

“What are you doing here?” Daiki asked again.

“I came to talk about the money you asked me for, but it has begun to look as though there are far more important things to talk about. Who was that man?”

If Daiki’s face could have gone paler then it did. His eyelids closed for a few seconds and when he clutched the wall for support, Takaki put an arm around Daiki’s shoulders and led the latter into the living room where his mother also looked as though she was on the verge of collapsing.

Once Daiki was seated, Takaki sat down himself, looking from Daiki to Arioka-san and back again. “Are you going to answer my question?”

Daiki closed his eyes for a moment before looking at his mother. “Can we have a little privacy, please?”

“Daiki, are you sure this is for the best?”

“Okaa-san, we can’t go on like this any longer. I have the baby to think now, and the things are only getting harder for us. I have to tell Yuya.”

His mother actually looked relieved as she nodded and left the room.

Once they were alone, Daiki told Takaki the whole story, about the loan his father had taken out in his mother’s name, about the payments that’s raising repeatedly.
“It’s a never ending nightmare.” He added once he finished.

“And this is why you wanted all that money?”

Daiki nodded, his arm folded across his chest, his eyes sadder than Takaki had ever seen them.

“Why didn’t you tell me before Daiki? I could have sorted all this mess for you!”

“Because my mother didn’t want anyone to know,” Daiki answered while frowning. “It’s very shameful to have been battered by the man she once loved, the man she married. She would have been deeply embarrassed. She’s not the sort of person to share his problems with strangers.”

Takaki wanted to take Daiki into his arms and comfort him, but he felt that was not the right thing to do considering the way he had spoken to him yesterday. Daiki would probably pushed him away and he didn’t want that.

His deepest concern at the moment was the man that’s doing this to them. Anger had risen in him as Daiki spoke, anger that any man could prey on two helpless people the way this man did. He played on their fear, driven by greed, uncaring that he was making their lives hell, and they probably weren’t the people he’s harassing.

“Do you know where this guy lives?”

Daiki shook his head at the same time looking quite alarmed. “You’re not thinking of confronting him?”

“Someone has to,” Takaki answered. “He can’t be allowed to get away with this. What he’s doing is unlawful.”

“It doesn’t stop him.”

“Of course not. There are plenty of people like him around, but they usually get their lessons in the end. He’ll give up soon, you’ll see. Meantime, I definitely think you should come and live with me, you and your mother. He’ll soon give up when he realizes that you no longer live here.”

“It’s not the answer.” said Daiki, although his heartbeats fasten at the thought. Okamoto would find them wherever they were, the only way they would get this man off their backs was to pay him full the amount he claimed they owed.

“I’m not giving you a choice. You’ll be safe, both you and your mother, and our baby. I promise you that. I’m not sure that all this stress is good for you or the little one.”

It wasn’t good for them, Daiki knew that, but he knew that Takaki was only offering him his home in order to keep the baby safe and keep him under his command. The other option he have was staying here and living with the nightmare of Okamoto every day. He had his mother to think too, all this worru was not doing his health any good. He deserved better. He had put up with so much during his life that it wouldn’t be fair to put him through any more. Not when Takaki had offered them a solution.

“I don’t seem to have much choice, do I?” he asked, unaware that his eyes reflected sorrow.

“Not if you know what’s best for you, for both of you.”

Daiki released a long sighed.

“So you agree? You’ll move in with me?”

Daiki nodded. “I’ll tell my mother.” Daiki didn’t dare to look Takaki in the eye. In a way, Takaki was saving their lives but he was not happy about it.

His mother though was both delighted and overwhelmed. “Thank you Takaki-kun,” she kept saying. “Thank you Takaki-kun. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“I think I do,” he answered. “What I want you both to do is pack up whatever you’ll need for the time being, and I’ll organize transport for the rest tomorrow.”

Everything was moving so fast that Daiki felt dizzy. Takaki took one look at him and ordered him to sit down. In contrast his mother seemed to be in good health and looks to bubbly, packing the things they needed.

And finally they left behind the house where so much misery had occurred. Daiki knew that this was only going to be for a few days but he couldn’t help feeling relieved. Not that he expected to be entirely happy living with Takaki. The closeness they had shared once was gone and there was no way he could go on living with Takaki permanently. Takaki wouldn’t want that either, he’s sure. Takaki was doing this just to ensure that the baby is safe.

His mother was in seventh heaven. “Whoever would have thought we’d end up living somewhere like this?” she asked. “Takaki-kun’s a good man Daiki.”

“It’s not permanent Okaa-san,” said Daiki, unaware that there’s a raise in his voice. “I don’t want to be his prisoner.”

His mother frowned. “How can you be his prisoner when you’re expecting his baby?”

“You’re forgetting we’re only just friends. There’s nothing between us anymore.” Excwpt his heart refused to believe it. It went on rampage every time Takaki is near, but there’s nothing he can do but ignore it, pretend it wasn’t happening. The honeymoon period was over, their relationship was held together by the baby and nothing more.

“Are you sure Daiki?”

“Of course I’m sure and we’re not going to stay here any longer than necessary.”

His mother’s voice was filled with alarm when she spoke. “We’re safe here Daiki, can’t you see that? Safe for the first time in our lives.”

“Yes, but…well, we’ll see.” He accepted reluctantly. He’s thinking of himself rather than his mother, which is selfish, but living with Takaki was not his idea of fun.

Later that evening when his mother had gone to bed early, Takaki invited Daiki to join him fo a drink.

“If you make it a hot chocolate.” Daiki said.

Takaki’s brows rose. “I actually like hot chocolate. Inoue-san will be delighted, she thinks I drink too much alcohol.”

“My mother really appreciated what you’re doing for us.” Daiki said. “It’s as though a whole weight has been lifted from her shoulders.”

Takaki nodded. “I can well imagine it. There’s no way I could allow you to go on living there, a perfect target for that monkey looking, greedy money lender. Why didn’t you tell me about him before, Daiki?”

“How could I?” Daiki asked. “He’s the biggest embarrassment of our lives. We bth felt so ashamed and we wanted no one to know.”

“As though it was your fault?” Takaki asked with understanding. “When in fact it was that useless man of a father who got you in this mess?”

Daiki closed his eyes and think about his life. The only good part of his whole life had been the time he’d spent in Hawaii. Only then had he been able to forget his problems. He’d been the happiest he had ever been. Except that the pleasure he had experienced then had now given way to a whole new set of problems. Unconsciously, he put his hand on his stomach.

Takaki’s eyes narrowed. “Are you all right Daiki? All this upset can’t be very good for you and for our baby.”

“I’m fine,” Daiki said. “A little tired, that’s all.”

“And is the little man all right?”

Daiki couldn’t help but smile. “He or maybe she,” he corrected, “is doing fine.”

When Inoue-san came in, settling a tray down on the table beside them, he was still resting his hand on his stomach. Inoue-san’s smile was warm and welcoming.

“It’s good to see you again Daiki-kun. I hope you and your mother will be very comfortable here. You must tell me of there is anything you need.”

“I will.” promised Daiki.

Their hot chocolate was in a thermos jug with two china mugs on the side. Takaki leaned forward and filled their mugs.

Daiki waited until Takaki had finished before saying. “Inoue-san know about the baby?”

Takaki shook his head. “I saw no reason to tell her.”

Because Takaki was ashamed? Because this is a mistake? Daiki shook his head and think about the future. He had n idea what the future held for him, but one thing he was certain, he couldn’t go back to their house again. They would need to find somewhere else to live, somewhere they would never be found by the greedy man named Okamoto. Maybe even move to a different part of the country. He had fancied living in America, that would be a good place, far enough to forget all his troubles, but would his mother like it there? Also how would they managed if they don’t have money.

“Do you still want me to carry on working for you?” he asked. “Because I would really like to do so.” He didn’t tell Takaki that it was to save for his plan.

Takaki smiled, one of those smiles that turned Daiki’s heart to beat faster.

“Nothing would please me more Daiki. I’ll miss you when you stop work to have the baby. You’re the best PA any man could ever wish for. It will be hard finding your successor.”

His best PA! What that all he meant to Takaki? His pleasure died. Takaki could just say that their affair is over and that the only reason they would stay in touch because of the baby. He picked up his mug of chocolate and cradled it between his hands and as silence settled between them he wondered whether he was jumping to wrong conclusion. Takaki had been talking about work, not their personal life.

It was his hormones, they were all over the place. He didn’t know what to think anymore. So much had happened today that all he longed for now was sleep. Peaceful and refreshing sleep. It would be the first night in a long time that their money worried hadn’t troubled him.

“Would you mind very much if I went to bed?” he asked as soon as he finished his drink. He had sipped it quickly that his mouth stung. “It’s been quite a day and I’m tired.”

“Of course.” Takaki said at once, standing up.

Takaki help out his hands and Daiki had no option but to take them and when Takaki had pulled him to his feet and pressed a kiss to his forehead, Daiki doesn’t know what to do.

“Sleep well, Daiki.”

And that wa it, no arms around him, no holding him close, no mouth to mouth contact. It was the sort of kiss you’d give a friend, but not a lover. He might as well get used to the idea that their situation had changed. That Takaki’s no longer wanted him in his bed. He was ultimately going to be the “mother” of Takaki’s child and the latter would see him just like that…
